Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from your company-owned and controlled resources.

Specifically, these include any burning processes from stationary (furnaces) or mobile (vehicles) combustion that use, for example, petrol, diesel, coal or other burning fuel materials.

They also include refrigerants and fire suppressant chemicals that may have leaked from the system. Some of these types of chemicals can be more than 10,000 times more harmful for the climate than CO2.

You may use a tool like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Emissions Calculation Tool for converting emissions to carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e): 

Do you know how your electricity is generated?

Ask your electricity supplier to provide you with a 3rd party verification of CO

 emissions related to the electricity you buy. 

Ask your supplier to provide you with custom CO

 emission factor per KWh of electricity you buy from them. This can be used to calculate your emissions (Amount of electricity consumed from your bill x Emission factor = Your emissions from electricity bought from your provider)

You can find out how the electricity you buy is generated by asking your electricity provider. You may also ask the provider what the emission factor is (how many kg of CO

e is produced for every KWh of energy you use). You may be able to cut down your company's CO

 emissions dramatically by switching to renewable energy (solar, wind, hydropower). Ask your current supplier for options. You may also consider switching your electricity provider if they can’t provide renewable options.

A company’s own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, meaning polluting gases like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, are important and there is a need for each company to map and reduce them. However, GHG emissions from a company's supply chain are typically much higher than that company's own emissions. Companies can save money by reducing energy use and their emissions.
